Painting outdoors is an excellent way to sharpen the artist's perception of nature's subtle and varied moods.
Rapidly-changing light conditions offer only a brief working window (usually two hours or less), forcing the artist to select and simplify, to move from one decision to the next quickly and boldly, and to experiment with colors and design.
The study is usually not meant to stand as a finished work, but rather to serve as a starting point for larger, more thoughtful studio works.
