Growing up in a rural Midwestern town, Cody was instilled at an early age with a solid work ethic and an affinity for nature and all its beauty. A natural artist, Cody has been drawing and painting since he was five and is continually inspired by the desert which has been his home for most of his adult life. "Each painting I do begins with an idea, something that's inspired me. I try to distill this in my mind until I've achieved an almost meditative state where I can explore which compositions, color harmonies, etc., will best serve my idea. The balance I'm searching for lies in creating a work that is technically proficient while preserving that which fueled my passion in the first place. The result hopefully will provide the viewer with a perspective they have not seen before." A passionate student of art, Cody has studied at the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the Scottsdale Artists School, where, in 2003, he was awarded a merit-based scholarship. In 2004, the Oil Painters of America, of which Cody is a member, selected him as that year's Shirl Smithson Scholarship winner. Cody is now sharing his passion for painting through teaching, offering private lessons at his studio in Cottonwood, Arizona, as well as plein-air instruction in and around the Sedona area. Cody also teaches classes and workshops through the Sedona Arts Center. See the 'Classes' page for more info. In the fall of 2006, one of Cody's paintings was selected for inclusion in a 'coffee-table' style book, titled Plein Air New Mexico, The Jack Richeson Series - Volume One. Currently Cody divides his time between studio and plein air work. He has participated in several plein air competitions, including The Sedona Plein Air Festival and Plein Air New Mexico. In 2007 Cody won the Artists' Choice Award at the PANM event in Santa Fe! Cody spent a month in Alaska painting in the spring of 2006, at the invitation of some of his collectors, several of the resulting paintings are now available on this website.
